Riga City Council approves reduction in public transport ticket prices for Riga residents

Today Riga City Council approved amendments to regulatory enactments, which will allow prices of public transport tickets for Riga residents to be cut as of January 1, 2014, together with the introduction of the euro. The amendments to the binding regulations on fare discounts provide that starting from next year the prices of tickets for Riga residents, i.e. those having declared their place of residence within the administrative area of Riga, will be reduced by half.

To further the declaration of residents in the capital city, those persons having declared their residence in Riga from September 25 till December 31 next year will be granted a 100% discount when buying a one-month public transport ticket.

The amendments also provide for 80% discount on prices of one-month tickets for students, parents of families with many children, teachers etc., who now enjoy a 60% discount from the regular one-month ticket price.

As reported earlier, on January 1, 2014, Riga local government will introduce a system allowing Riga residents to pay less for using public transport. One trip in buses, trolleybuses and trams of Riga municipal company "Rīgas satiksme" will cost Riga residents EUR 0.60. Passengers having not declared their residence in Riga will pay EUR 1.20 per one trip. The Commission for Licensing of Commercial Passenger Transportation Services of Riga City Council gave its conceptual approval to this basic tariff at today’s meeting.

To identify Riga residents, personalised e-tickets will be used, which will also fulfil the function of Riga resident’s card.

Amendments have been made in binding regulations No. 89 „On fare discounts in network of Riga public transport network”, adopted by Riga City Council on August 24, 2010.
